Malta

Malta is still a country that is relatively untouched with tourists and has some of the most amazing beaches, bays and lagoons with its crystal clear blue water as well as culture and history in the capital city of Valletta as well as the Old Capital of Mdina.

I spent 4 full days and 5 nights in Malta and although this is never enough time for a country, I felt like I saw everything I wanted to and got to enjoy the time there.

The first night I stayed in St Julian’s and on Saturday morning, I walked around the St Julian’s and Silema area and then caught a ferry from Silema to Valletta. The views from the ferry looking out to Valletta are beautiful.

Katie and Jono picked me up at midday and we headed to St Paul’s area to our penthouse airbnb. We had lunch at Ocean Basket and I shared the prawns and mezze platter with Katie as well as some rose. Afterwards, we bought some ciders then went down to the bay to chill and go for a swim.

We stayed at an amazing penthouse with 180 degree views from the balcony across to the sea, so we chilled there with some drinks and then caught a taxi to Valletta for dinner and drinks.

We went to the rooftop of Hotel Castille which had a restaurant in it. There was a private function up there (as part of the Valletta Film Festival) but we luckily got to go up. The 3 course set menu was €24 and we enjoyed the mushrooms in a garlic sauce, the rib eye and a selection of desserts. The view from the top were beautiful!

Afterwards, we went to Charles Grech for some cocktails.

Sunset views over Valletta

On Sunday, we drove down to Marsaxlokk for the Sunday fish markets. It is bustling and there are lots of fresh produce vendors as well as clothes and shoe stalls. We picked up some pastizzis and then drove to nearby St Peter’s Pool.

St Peter’s Pool was busy but we found a spot and jumped into the water from the cliff faces which was scary at first but so much fun! After hanging here for a couple of hours, we headed to Mdina. We went to Palazzo de Piro for lunch where I had the prawn pappadelle which was a little average.

We headed back to our airbnb, relaxed with some drinks then headed to Cafe Del Mar for sunset drinks which was fun.

Gozo

We spent the next day at Gozo which is another island in Malta. We drove to Cirkewwa Ferry Terminal and took the car to Gozo. The best way to see Gozo is definitely by car so you can stop whenever you want. We first explored the Citadella in Victoria (Rabat) and it was good to see the historical side of the city.

We then drove to Xlendi Bay and went to Ta’ Karolina for lunch – there was complimentary bruschetta then we shared the homemade ricotta ravioli and had the grilled calamari. The portions were massive and it was a great meal!

Dwejra Point – this is where the famous azure window was. We swam here for ages and the boys went to the caves. Xwenji Bay was amazing where there was a gorge where people were swimming. The salt flats were cool to see and we bought some salt to take back.

We got the ferry back around 6:30pm and went to Mithna for dinner – we got a bottle of wine, shared the meat platter and got a seafood risotto which was great.

We stopped by again at Sottozero gelato and got a pistachio and hazelnut gelato – yum!

Comino

We drove to Marfa Ferry Terminal, parked here and caught the 9am ferry to Comino Island to go to the Blue Lagoon. I highly recommend getting the earliest ferry as this means you will avoid the crowds initially at the Blue Lagoon.

We got to spend a couple of hours with less people and by 11am, it was packed! We hired some deck chairs for €20 for 2 people and it was totally worth it as we were right on the water and means we had some shade. There is no shade anywhere here so be prepared if you can’t be out in the sun for too long! We hung out, went swimming and exploring.

The water is incredibly blue and good to swim in. We went for a walk and went to nearby crystal lagoon which was equally as amazing and the water was a different sort of deep blue. We went for a quick dip there as well.

We headed back by ferry and on the way back, we stopped by at Sottozero to get gelato and Sphinx Pastizzeria to get pastizzis.

In the evening, we went to Riviera Martinique beach bar for dinner. This was located right on the beach and had a really relaxed, casual vibe. We had cocktails and shared some nachos and pizzas. It was the perfect spot for the sunset and to enjoy our last night together.

It was a relaxing and enjoyable 5 days off in Malta especially catching up with a good friend and meeting new ones. With stunning scenery, amazing weather and beaches, I will be back!
