Weekend trips in Europe in December means colder weather but it also means festive Christmas markets.
With cheap flights to Luxembourg (but not so cheap accommodation), the main reason for the trip was to tick off another European country and to enjoy the Christmas markets.
Michael and I stayed at 2 nights at Le Royal Luxembourg which was super nice and right in the city centre, making it super convenient to walk everywhere.
I arrived quite late on Friday evening and went straight from the hotel to Kaale Kaffi, a cute art/antique bar for a drink. We then went to The Tube for drinks and after it closed, we headed to Apoteca which was good fun.
The next morning, Michael and I had breakfast at Chique-o-Latte.
We walked around the Old Town by foot and we stopped by at Nathalie Bonn Chocolate House for their amazing hot chocolates. You choose a wooden spoon with chocolate on the end (with their many flavours) and dip it in the warm milk. I had the praline which was delicious!
There are 3 different Christmas markets in the city centre and we explored all three especially for the food and drinks. You must try the “gromperekichelcher” which is basically crispy potato fritters and tastes like a hash brown! We also tried the sausage and potato with bacon!
After all the food, we went for a walk towards the Grund which is different to the Old Town but also has beautiful views.
For dinner, we went to Siegfried Brasserie. Michael and I shared the salmon, the “paschteit” which was puff pastry with chicken and mushroom (my favourite!) and another Luxembourgish dish which was like gnocchi but quite heavy.
In the evening, we headed to a few bars like Cafe Interview, De Gudde Wellen and Urban Bar.
The next morning, Michael and I headed to Charles Sandwiches Ville for a late breakfast.
We then had to go back to Nathalie Bonn Chocolate House for our last hot chocolate before heading home.
It was a great city break and I am glad I got to experience a new country, however as it’s such a small city, I won’t necessarily be racing back!
